Former Chief Editor of COP joins an Academic Exchange Activity in China

In order to advance the development of psychiatry in China, build an international academic platform and promote the influence of the Current Opinion in Psychiatry (COP) and its Chinese edition in China, the Shenzhen Foncoo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. joined hands with Wolters Kluwer China and CME Window in inviting Professor DAVID J. KUPFER, former Chief Editor of COP, and Professor ELLEN FRANK, an academician at the American Medical College, to exchange activities held in China. The two international experts attended a number of academic exchange activities held in Beijing, Jinan and Nanjing, etc. from August 23rd to 27th. In the activities, Chinese experts and scholars conducted in-depth discussions with Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK on issues about contributing to COP and international psychiatry studies.
The First Stop on COP Editor’s Trip to China
At the invitation of Professor Lu Lin, Chairperson-elect of the Chinese Society of Psychiatry (CSP) of Chinese Medical Association and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK paid a visit to the Peking University Sixth Hospital on the morning of August 23rd. They visited the main clinical departments in the company of experts of the Peking University Sixth Hospital and exchanged ideas with the experts on differences in the clinical departments and the diagnosis and treatment procedures. Professor DAVID J. KUPFER shared with the psychiatric clinicians and experts the latest diagnosis and treatment method and research progress of bipolar disorders, especially the challenges arising in the treatment process. Academician ELLEN FRANK gave a presentation of the characteristics of cohort studies, key design decisions and appropriate analytical methods as well as the opportunities and challenges faced by cohort studies in China. The novel and practical speeches enjoyed great popularity and aroused a heated discussion among the attendees. It was in this way that the two international experts started their trip to China.
 
 
The Second Stop on COP Editor’s Trip to China
 
The 2019 Academic Conference of Medical Branch of Depression, Beijing Medical Association, hosted by the Beijing Anding Hospital was held in Beijing and chaired by Wang Gang, President of the Beijing Anding Hospital. Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK were invited to the conference on the afternoon of August 23rd and gave a wonderful speech. Professor DAVID J. KUPFER talked about the current diagnosis and treatment method of bipolar disorders adopted in DSM-5 and challenges faced. He also gave a presentation of the difference between DSM-IV and ICD-11. As President of DSM-5 Depression Group, Academician ELLEN FRANK also talked about the current diagnosis and treatment method of bipolar disorders adopted in DSM-5 and challenges faced. At the academic conference, Professor Xiang Yutao, from University of Macau, gave a report on the application of evidence-based medicine in Chinese clinical studies on mood disorders.
 
 
The Third Stop on COP Editor’s Trip to China
 
Contributing to the SCI Journals is a hard-to-solve problem for almost every doctor that wants to be conferred an academic title. “The Road to Success in writing a Qualified SCI Paper on Psychiatry” was held at the Shandong Mental Health Center on August 24th in order to solve this problem. Professor Wang Ruzhan, Director of the Center, exchanged ideas with d Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK on precautions and common issues about contributing to the SCI Journals.
Professor DAVID J. KUPFER expressed his hope that the conference could provoke young and middle-aged scholars’ thinking and assist them in publishing highly influential SCI papers. According to Academician ELLEN FRANK, SCI has certain requirements for papers to be published and that novelty, popularity and the probability of changing clinical thinking and practice might be three important review items. They also encouraged Chinese physicians to carry out more clinical studies in an effort to publish papers in highly influential SCI Journals.
Academician ELLEN FRANK also discussed with some psychiatric clinicians of Shandong on the international research progress of depression and autographed books to be donated. The conference was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, in which the participating scholars actively asked questions, and Academician ELLEN FRANK answered the questions passionately, benefiting the rest participants quite a lot.
 
 
The Fourth Stop on COP Editor’s Trip to China
 
On the morning of August 27th, Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK attended the “COP Chinese and Foreign Editor Face-to-Face” Academic Exchange Activity hosted by the Nanjing Brain Hospital and chaired by Professor Zhang Ning, President of the Hospital. At the conference, Professor DAVID J. KUPFER gave a wonderful speech on the effects of diagnosis, treatment, prognosis analysis and long-term prognosis on the psychological state and bodily functions of patients with bipolar disorders. Academician ELLEN FRANK talked about the treatment and comorbidities of depression as well as challenges faced. At the conference, the Chinese and foreign experts conducted a heated discussion and exchange of ideas on the international research actualities of mental disorders. 200 doctors listened carefully, asked questions actively and interacted with the international experts.
 
 
 
After attending 4 academic exchange activities, Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK had a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the development of psychiatry in China. They expected to strengthen the relationship between COP and Chinese psychiatrists and scholars. Finally, Professor DAVID J. KUPFER and Academician ELLEN FRANK expressed their thanks to Wolters Kluwer China, CME Window and Foncoo for initiating the exchange activities. The former Chief Editor of COP ended his first visit to China. He is expected to visit China again to hold face-to-face communication with Chinese psychiatrists!
